FLOWRA: A Living Laboratory for Societal Evolution

Challenge

As our civilization faces unprecedented environmental and social challenges, we urgently need new models for human society that demonstrate sustainable, regenerative ways of living. However, developing and testing regenerative technologies typically happens in isolation, with locations excelling in specific areas while lacking in others. The regenerative movement requires dedicated spaces where existing solutions can be integrated and new ones prototyped, creating comprehensive societal templates that can be refined and validated and then shared globally.

Solution

FLOWRA (Flourishing Life Oasis Wellbeing Research Action) is a living laboratory concept: an immersive environment where new paradigm technologies and methodologies are developed, integrated and tested in daily life. It brings together experts and solutions from diverse fields to create replicable templates for thriving societies, working across all layers of society, from individual wellbeing and culture to currency, food systems and infrastructure. Twelve foundational pillars ensure every aspect of a flourishing society is covered, and a zoned design lets solutions move from deep research and development, through testing in daily life, and out into the world. FLOWRA is designed to be adapted to different places, and it is one model within the wider family of Open Earth Innovation Environments. Each of these environments connects into the Open Earth Ecosystem at the level that suits it, from sharing knowledge and tools to full participation in the local, bioregional and global commons stewardship, so that resources and solutions created in one place are shared.

Development

FLOWRA is at concept stage. Its design is developed, several locations are being explored, and the search continues for the right partners, land stewards and funders for the first immersive environment. In the meantime, the Open Systems Foundation has concentrated on the commons infrastructure that every innovation environment will rely on: the governance, stewardship and coordination systems of the Open Earth Ecosystem. When the first FLOWRA site is established, it can therefore plug into working infrastructure from the start, with clear ways to hold land and assets in stewardship, share its innovations, and collaborate with other environments. Implementation will follow a phased approach, refining systems carefully before scaling.
